She is editor of My Money My Lifestyle, the personal finance section of national Sunday newspaper City Press for which she recently won the 2013 Sanlam Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism under the category of Consumer Financial Education.

Maya edited the South African version of Dave Ramsey's best seller "The Total Money Makeover" and is about to publish her own book on money matters.

Jannie Mouton

Siyabulela (Siya) Xuza

 

Presentation Title: Unleashing Disruptive African Innovations

At 26 years of age, engineer Siyabulela Xuza is one of the new young generation of Africans who are committed to developing the continent's potential through disruptive innovations.

Xuza's interest in science was triggered in early 1994 when he watched a plane drop election pamphlets onto the rural village he spent time in as a child, a project led by Nelson Mandela to educate the country in democracy.

Siya began a project on a rocket fuel that led to an invitation to the 2006 Nobel Prize Ceremonies in Sweden and that was awarded a first place at the 2007 Intel Science and Engineering Fair - the world's largest youth innovation fair. In 2008, MIT's Lincoln Laboratory named a minor planet "Siyaxuza", found near the Jupiter asteroid belt, in his honor.

David Ashiagbor

Making Finance Work for Africa (MFW4A)

 

David works with development partners, policy makers, regulators and the private sector to support financial sector development in Africa, focussing on long term finance. He has been an advocate for pension reform in Africa in recent years, in addition to carrying out extensive research on the subject.

David’s experience includes the Commonwealth Secretariat, where he helped raise US$800 million for a series of private equity funds, the International Finance Corporation, the Agence Française de Développement and commercial banks in his native Ghana.

He is a graduate of the London School of Economics and The Management School, Imperial College, London.

Peter Baird

Peter is Head of Africa Private Equity at Standard Chartered Bank. He is responsible for SCPE's Principal Finance business across sub-Saharan Africa. He has 19 years of experience in private equity, consulting, and investment banking. He spent 11 years at McKinsey in South Africa and in the U.S., where he was a partner in the healthcare and private-equity practices. From 2006 to 2008, Peter was President of DJO, Inc., a Blackstone-led medical-devices LBO. Earlier in his career he was a Principal at Brait Capital Partners, and in the M&A group at Lehman Brothers. Peter holds an MBA from Stanford, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar, and a MA (Economics) from the University of Cape Town. Peter is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Antony Ball

 

Antony obtained a B.Comm and B.Comm (Honours) from the University of Cape Town, and a Master of Philosophy (Management Studies) at Oxford University (Rhodes Scholar).  

He completed his articles with Deloitte and founded The Strategy Group, a unit within Deloitte advising clients on Strategy and Organisation.  In 1990, he co-founded Capital Partners, South Africa's first independent private equity firm.  In 1998, Capital Partners was merged with the investment banking interests of Capital Alliance Holdings to form Brait.  For 9 of the 12 years since the formation of Brait he acted as its CEO.  During this time he played a key role in the raising, management and organisation of Brait's private equity funds and led numerious investments covering industrial services, technology, manufacturing, media, agricultural services, chemicals.

John Bellew

John Bellew is a partner in the Corporate Business Unit at Webber Wentzel.
He specialises in all aspects of private equity, including fund formation, merger and acquisition (M&A) activity, management arrangements and acquisition finance. He also has public market merger and acquisition experience and has advised on a number of listings.

John has advised prominent South African and international private equity houses on some of the largest private equity transactions undertaken in the South African market. Paul Boynton

Stuart Bradley

David Cooke

Kathleen Danoher

Emile du Toit

Head of PAIDF 2, Harith General Partners

 

Emile joined Harith General Partners in 2011 as the Head of PAIDF 1, a $630 million Private Equity Fund investing in Greenfield and expansionary Infrastructure Projects in Africa.  Emile currently heads up the successor fund to PAIDF 1, namely PAIDF 2, and leads the PAIDF Investment Team in identifying, evaluating, concluding and managing all investments of the Fund.

Prior to joining Harith, he worked for DBSA, where he was Divisional Executive for Private Equity and Investment Banking.  He has also served on the Board of SAVCA since 2009 and was the Chairperson of SAVCA between 2011 and 2014.

Richard Flett

Tim Flower joined HarbourVest's London-based subsidiary in 2008 to focus on European secondary investments. Tim joined HarbourVest after four years with Bridgepoint in London, where he was involved in several investments, including Alliance Medical, ERM, 1st Credit, and Diaverum. Tim also spent 18 months on secondment to the Bridgepoint Nordic team. Cathy Goddard

Cathy is a Chief Investment Officer at Vuwa.  Her role includes originating, assessing, valuing, structuring, negotiating, funding and closing private equity transactions.  She is also involved in post-deal management on the deals.  Cathy has been with Vuwa since March 2009.

Before joining Vuwa she was involved in Investment Banking and was employed by Investec Bank Limited for 7 years.  At Investec Cathy focused primarily on funding Black Econonmic Empowerment transactions in the mid-market space as well as on other shareholder re-organizations, such as management buy-outs and buy-ins, leverages buy-outs and share buy-backs.

Cathy also has experience in funding traditional acquisition or growth finance requirements for unlisted companies.

Murray Grant

Prior to joining CDC in January 2015, Murray was a Partner at Actis LLP.  He began his career as an engineer on the Kiambere Hydro-Electric Scheme in Kenya and subsequently spent 13 years at 3i in the UK.  Murray joined CDC Capital Partners in 2001 and was subsequently a founding partner of Actis in 2004 with responsibility for developing its Africa business.  Murray's investment and NED track record has covered most sectors and regions across Africa and he is currently chairman of Vlisco, a pan West African branded fabric business.

Daniel Hatfield

Since co-founding Edge, Daniel has been involved in Enterprise and Supplier Development ("ESD") across the entire value chain - from developing and implementing ESD strategies for corporates across multiple sectors, to being "hands on" with grassroots SME incubation.  Daniel has structured, raised capital and set up 4 first-of-a-kind ESD Funds for companies and associations across industry.  The first of these (known as "Vumela"), which Edge manages in an alliance with FirstRand Bank is the largest ESD Fund in the market (R400m under management).

Anthony Hewat

Founder and Director of Metier

 

Anthony Hewat is a founder and director of Metier and a principal of its private equity fund activities.  He is a chartered accountant who qualified with Deloitte and is a mathematics graduate of Oxford University.  In 1994, he joined Capital Partners where he was Managing Director from 1996 to 1999, during which time the business negotiated its merger to form Brait.  Anthony was a principal of all the private equity funds, which together made approximately sixty investments during his period.

Since co-founding Metier, Anthony has completed a number of private equity transactions and has been instumental in the organisation and management of the Lereko Metier Capital Growth Fund.  In addition to the investment-specific responsibilities, he has oversigh of the financial reporting and valuation process of the firm and funds, and the Sustainable Capital investing programme.

Anne Keppler

Mr Sibusiso Luthuli is the Chief Executive and Principal Officer of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund (EPPF).  EPPF is one of the largest self-administered defined benefit pesion fund in South Africa with assets under management in excess of R100 billion.

Mr Luthuli is a qualified Chartered Accountant.  He is the deputy chairperson of the Batseta Council of Retirement Funds for South Africa.  He has perviously served on the board of directors of various JSE listed companies.

Stuart MacKenzie

Fulu Makwetla

Investment Manager, Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF)

 

Fulu is the Investment Manager of the Government Employees Pension Fund - the largest Pension Fund in Africa, with assets of more than R1.4 trillion (USD150bn), representing the retirement interest of 1.2 million members and over 360 000 pensioners.  She is responsible for managing the Private Equity portfolio of funds (Fund of funds) for the GEPF as well as the overall GEPF portfolio of investments.

Prior to joining GEPF, Fulu worked for RisCura as a Senior Consultant, Consulting to Pension Funds and Medical schemes in Southern Africa.  She also worked for RMB Asset Management and has over 10 years of experience in the industry.  Fulu is a well-known figure in the Southern African pension fund industry.

Jeff Miller

Jeff is a serial entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He has been involved in a number of successful start-ups. He co-founded Brandcorp - listed on the JSE in 1997 and sold in a management buy-out for approximately R1.4 billion. Other companies he founded include KNR Flatrock, Balboa Finance, Born Free Properties and Bride & Co and Eurosuit, the largest chain of bridal department stores in South Africa.

With a keen interest in real estate on the African continent, Clinton joined the Direct Property Investment Franchise in 2013.  Clinton started his career at STANLIB in 2007 and gained experience in various roles within the investment team.  In 2010, he co-founded the Portfolio Analytics and Implementation team and prior to that he was Assistant Fund Manager for STANLIB's International Funds.  Clinton reports to the Fund Manager and is responsible for coordinating detailed research, financial modelling and appraisals on the Fund's investments.  Clinton is also involved in specific project delivery with the Asset Managers and is key to overall advisory function within the Fund.

Andries van Rensburg

Chief Exeutive Officer and founder-shareholder Andries van Rensburg has been involved in many and varies facets of the South African food industry.  His operational and management experience in the sector, couples with his considerable expertise in general management, mentorship and trade relations, lends Libstar its stellar leadership advantage.
